    1. Program proposals for the 2017 NAPABA Convention are due Monday, March 20, 2017, at 5 p.m. EDT.  For more information on how to submit a program proposal, please visit NAPABA's Call for Programs page.
    2. The deadline to apply for a stipend to attend NAPABA's Lobby Day is Wednesday, March 22, 2017.  Stipend applications are available for NAPABA direct members traveling to Lobby Day from out of town. The stipend application can be found on the Lobby Day registration form.

    Dear AALAM,

    On Tuesday, March 21st, 2017, Suffolk University Law Schools Asian Pacific American Law Students Association (APALSA) will be hosting an event entitled, Striving for Success In A World of Diverse Backgrounds as part of the Nutter Speaker Series for Diversity & Inclusion.The time of the event will be from 6:00pm - 8:00pm in the first floor function room located at Suffolk University Law School at 120 Tremont St. Boston MA, 02108. Food and refreshments will be served.   

    The goal of this event is geared towards providing students with an opportunity to seek guidance and advice from experienced faculty advisers, human resource directors, and practicing attorneys from various legal fields and backgrounds on how to market themselves in the legal practice profession when seeking employment and/or going into interviews. Our panelist will have an open dialogue and give some of their very own insights on how to fill the gap between the legal profession and lack of diversity. Panelists will be able to share their experiences and give advice to students on ways to stand out when entering the legal field and audience members will be able to participate with a follow up questions and answer time towards the end. 

    Our moderator for the evening will be Professor Dyane O'Leary, Suffolk University Law School Professor of Law, who has hosted the annual “Elephant in the Room" luncheon at Suffolk University Law School, a group discussion aimed at the issues of diversity and inclusion in the classroom and how we might be able to foster respectful discussions. Our panel speakers will include: 

    • Professor Renée M. Landers – Faculty Director, Health and Biomedical Law Concentration 
    • April English – Organization Development & Diversity Chief at the Massachusetts Attorney General Office
    • Shagha Tousi Russell – Partner at Nutter McClennen & Fish LLP
    • Professor Sarah Boonin – Associate Director Clinical Programs and Associate Clinical Professor of Law

    ASIAN AMERICAN LAWYERS ASSOCIATION OF MASSACHUSETTS
    is pleased to announce its nineteenth annual

    $5,000 SCHOLARSHIP AWARD
    For the 2017-2018 Academic Year

    The Asian-American Lawyers Association of Massachusetts (AALAM) in conjunction with the Harry H. Dow Memorial Legal Assistance Fund (Dow Fund) is pleased to announce the nineteenth annual AALAM/Dow Fund Scholarship in the total amount of $5,000 that will be awarded to one law student for the 2017-2018 academic year.

    The AALAM/Dow Fund Scholarship is intended to be awarded each academic year to an Asian-American law student who demonstrates leadership potential, maturity and responsibility, a commitment to making a contribution to the Asian-American community, an interest in pursuing public interest positions and other indicia of excellence, whether personal, professional or academic.

    In order to apply for and be eligible for the AALAM/Dow Fund Scholarship, potential candidates must be enrolled at a law school in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts for the 2017-2018 academic year, must complete and return the AALAM/DOW FUND SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION FORM to Vincent Lai, along with all other requierd documents.

    All materials must be received by Friday, April 7, 2017 for consideration. 

    Finalists may be interviewed by one or more members of the AALAM/Dow Fund Scholarship Committee (if determined to be necessary).

    The Scholarship recipient will be recognized at the 32nd Annual Dow Dinner taking place on Friday, December 1, 2017, but the Scholarship will be awarded at the AALAM Banquet, which will take place on May 3, 2017.

    AALAM happily congratulates Sarah G. Kim, past AALAM president (2010-2013) and board member, on her appointment as Deputy Treasurer of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts by State Treasurer Deborah Goldberg.  Sarah has served as general counsel of the State Treasury since Treasurer Goldberg began her term in 2015, and will also continue in that role.  Before joining the Treasury, Kim was an assistant attorney general in the Fraud and Financial Crimes Division under Attorney General Martha Coakley. Before that, she was in the litigation practice group of Bingham McCutchen LLP (now Morgan, Lewis & Bockius LLP).
