The Asian American Lawyers Association of Massachusetts (AALAM) is a non-partisan, non-profit organization devoted to serving the Asian American legal community and improving and facilitating the administration of law and justice. Founded in 1984 by a small group of Asian-American lawyers, AALAM has now grown to a network of over 250 lawyers, judges, law professors, and law students in Massachusetts and New England.
AALAM is a Northeast Region affiliate of the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association (NAPABA) and an affinity bar partner of the Boston Bar Association.
We currently have four membership sub-groups for law firm, solo & small firm, in house counsel, and government & public interest lawyers, but welcome any interest from members to establish any new committees and sub-groups.
Since 1997, AALAM has awarded an annual AALAM Scholarship Award to an Asian American law student studying in Massachusetts. Starting in 2015, we formalized our collaboration with The Harry H. Dow Memorial Legal Assistance Fund (the Dow Fund) and doubled the scholarship award to $5,000.
In 2015, AALAM and the other affiliate bar partners of the Boston Bar Association received the 6th Annual Beacon Award for Diversity & Inclusion. The six Affinity Bar Associations were recognized for the impressive impact they have made on Boston’s legal community and the community at large by bringing together attorneys committed to the values of professional excellence, service, and diversity. They not only foster camaraderie through networking and mentorship, but serve as a valuable source for members’ professional development. In particular, the Beacon Award Nominating Committee was struck by the affinity bars’ extensive collaboration in cross-cultural support of all diverse professionals.
