For Law Students
Current law students attending Massachusetts law schools are invited to join AALAM for FREE. Law student members have all the benefits of AALAM membership except that they cannot vote in AALAM elections and do not receive automatic NAPABA membership.
AALAM Scholarship
Since 1997, AALAM has awarded the annual AALAM Scholarship Award to an Asian American law student who demonstrates leadership potential, maturity and responsibility, a commitment to making a contribution to the Asian American community and other indicia of excellence, whether personal, professional or academic. Priority consideration will be given to law students who have secured a public interest position for the summer.
The first AALAM Scholarship was awarded to Glenn Magpantay, who was then a student at New England School of Law and is now a Staff Attorney with the Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund (AALDEF) in New York. Past scholarship winners are listed here:
Starting in 2015, AALAM, in conjunction with the Harry H. Dow Memorial Legal Assistance Fund (Dow Fund), announced that it was doubling its annual AALAM Scholarship to $5,000. The Scholarship application is typically due in late March or early April, and the award recipient is announced at the AALAM annual banquet. The awardee then speaks at the Annual Dow Dinner in December.
Professional Development and Networking Opportunities
AALAM organizes numerous events that offer professional development and networking opportunities to law students, among others. These events include our annual Speed Mentoring Nights, annual Summer Associates Luncheon, and regular Happy Hour networking events. We also invite students to volunteer to help with various AALAM events and initiatives, which provides a more casual and informal way to get to know AALAM's professional members.
