Civil legal aid is essential. With it, people can avoid displacement, receive necessary benefits for themselves and their families, and exercise their rights as workers. However, legal aid providers do not currently have the resources they need to meet demand for their services. On average, Massachusetts legal aid organizations are forced to turn away approximately 47% of eligible residents asking for assistance. As a result, eligible residents – people with a household income at or below 125% of the federal poverty level or $34,688 for a family of four – are left in a complex legal system with limited options for obtaining justice.
In FY23, the Equal Justice Coalition garnered $41 million in state funding for civil legal aid in the Commonwealth. This $6 million increase from the previous fiscal year means that more low-income individuals will have access to necessary legal services: to protect their homes, their economic stability, their health, and their children, among other things.
The EJC’s annual budget campaign begins with a virtual lobby day, the Talk to the Hill for Civil Legal Aid. At the Talk to the Hill, hundreds of attorneys, law students, and advocates convene online with their state legislators to discuss the importance of increased civil legal aid funding.
